kanshitsu (‘dry lacquer’), maki-e and eggshell and mother-of-pearl inlay The sea has been created by sprinkling various shades of blue lacquer chips and powder onto the still damp lacquer. The white foam is represented by numerous pieces of inlaid (quail) eggshell. It is almost as if we are looking at the bird on this box through binoculars. Never before had an animal figure been depicted so faithfully in lacquer. A Salon piece from 1938.

    Een langwerpige doos met een hoge deksel en afgeronde hoeken. Over het gehele vlak een versiering in verschillende kleuren lak, parelmoer en kwartel ei van een Japanse aalscholver (umiu, Phalacrocorax capillatus) staand op een rots met de vleugels uitgespreid, met de golven van de zee er omheen. De onderkant is zwart, de binnenkant heeft rechthoekige en vierkante stukken goudfolie onder een oranje laklaag; om de rand van de deksel en de doos een zilveren montuur en een zwarte rand met een geometrisch motief. Originele houten doos met geel katoenen doek en een papieren etiket.
